Project Coordination

Linköping University acts as the coordinating institution of the GANANA project. Is a leading Swedish research university with a strong profile in engineering, computer science, and interdisciplinary research. As the coordinator of GANANA, Linköping University is responsible for overall project coordination and management, and focus on shaping the project’s long-term sustainability and digital partnership roadmap. Through its hosting of NAISS (the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden), the university brings national expertise in high-performance computing, data services, and user support.

Life Sciences

HPC enables advanced biomolecular modelling and simulations essential for drug and protein design. These techniques, powered by exascale computing, support research across pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and other biotech industries.

Royal Institute of Technology (KTH)

KTH is one of Europe’s top schools for science and engineering. KTH hosts PDC, the lead centre for high performance computing for the Swedish academic community. PDC operates leading edge compute resources for national users, including Sweden’s flagship “Dardel” – as well as resources for specific research groups. PDC has an extensive user support program with parallelization experts working closely with users and application providers alike to optimize their programs for HPC usage.

Utrecht University (UU)

Utrecht University is a public research university in Utrecht, Netherlands. The Bijvoet Centre for Biomolecular Research is a research institute located at Utrecht University and performs research on the relation between the structure and function of biomolecules which play a role in biological processes such as regulation, interaction and recognition. It is an Instruct-ERIC centre and has a long-standing participation in EU-funded programs. The UU partner has a long history of developing software, in particular HADDOCK which is a core application in the BioExcel CoE.

University of Jyvӓskylӓ

The University of Jyvӓskylӓ is an internationally renowned research university and an expert in education that focuses on human and natural sciences. JYU was a core partner in funding phase 2 of BioExcel Centre of Excellence. JYU will be joining the project as an affiliated entity to CSC – IT Center for Science as its operations complement the activities of CSC to fit the scope of the project.

Geophysical Hazards

GeoHazards involve complex, large-scale simulations that require HPC to manage multi-physics processes across space and time. Supercomputing enables improved early warning systems, short-term forecasts, and urgent computing services for disaster preparedness.

Goethe Universität Frankfurt Am Main (GUF)

GUF is a major public research university, founded in 1914, known for its academic excellence and strong interdisciplinary research. With over 40,000 students and 16 faculties, it offers a broad range of academic programs and collaborates with leading research institutions worldwide. In the field of geographical hazards, Goethe University is actively involved in research addressing environmental and climate challenges. A notable example is the RobustNature project, which focuses on the interplay between environmental pollution, climate change, land use, and their effects on biodiversity and human well-being. The project takes a transdisciplinary approach, integrating natural and social sciences to better understand and mitigate environmental risks. These initiatives highlight Goethe University’s strong commitment to advancing research in environmental and geographical hazard mitigation.

Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC)

BSC is a leading research institution specializing in high-performance computing (HPC) and is a pioneer in combining HPC service provision and R&I into both Computer and Computational science from different fields (Life, Earth and Engineering sciences) under one roof. In the GANANA project, BSC contributes to both the GeoHazards and Weather & Climate domains, focusing on the simulation of natural hazards and the improvement of computational workflows and codes for early warning and urgent computing. This work supports effective decision-making in disaster-prone regions.

Spanish National Research Council (CSIC)

The Spanish National Research Council is the largest research institution in Spain and one of the most renowned institutions in the European Research Area. The Geosciences Barcelona institute (GEO3BCN-CSIC) is the CSIC’s reference in geosciences and its mission is to provide solutions to societal needs through knowledge transfer applied to georisks and global change, georesources, and geodynamic. Currently, GEO3BCN-CSIC coordinates the EuroHPC ChEESE CoE and the Horizon Europe DT-GEO project which is implementing interdisciplinary and interrelated Digital Twin Components (DTCs) for geophysical hazards from earthquakes (natural or anthropogenically induced), volcanoes and tsunamis.

EDANYA Group of UMA (University of Málaga)

The EDANYA Group of UMA is the European leader in modelling and numerical simulation of tsunamis, with two European flagship codes, Tsunami-HySEA and Landslide-HySEA in its portfolio. In the GANANA project they aim to implement an urgent computing platform for assessing tsunami impact in the coast of India in very short times after the definition of the initial seismic source is received.

Weather & Climate

Climate modelling relies heavily on HPC to run high-resolution Earth System Models (ESMs) and assess the impacts of global warming. Continued development of algorithms, workflows, and community codes is essential to fully exploit advanced architectures and support science, policy, and industry needs.

Eviden

Eviden is a next-gen technology leader in data-driven, trusted and sustainable digital transformation with a strong portfolio of patented technologies. Eviden expands the possibilities of data and technology across the digital continuum, now and for generations to come. In GANANA, the Eviden’s Center for Excellence in Performance Programming (CEPP) is teaming up with the Indian and European partners to extend the High Performance Weather and Climate benchmark (HPCW) with a dwarf extracted from an Indian weather and climate application. Then, this new HPCW component will be deployed on both EuroHPC and C-DAC supercomputers to study the reproducibility of both numerical results and performances among different HPC systems and software stacks.

CMCC Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change

CMCC is an international research center focused on understanding the interaction between climate change and society. The Foundation is involved in the GANANA project through two of its institutes: the Institute for the Earth System Prediction (IESP) and the Institute for Climate Resilience (ICR). IESP specializes in multi-scale climate prediction, ocean forecasting, data assimilation, bio-geochemical modeling, and AI/ML applications, leveraging advanced HPC and cloud computing. ICR focuses on regional climate change, extreme events, and cascading hazards, integrating risk assessments and ecosystem-climate-human interactions to support policy and resilience strategies. CMCC also has a consolidated communication and outreach strategy based on a multi-platform approach which combines various resources designed for different target audiences. CMCC’s expertise extends also to various projects funded by the European Union, which include citizen science initiatives and co-creation and co-development approaches and methodologies for solutions.

Indian Consortium

Building synergies

The European Centres of Excellence for HPC Applications in Biomolecular Research (BioExcel), Geophysical Hazards (ChEESE) and Weather/Climate prediction (ESiWACE3) will leverage the three largest European supercomputing systems to date (LUMI, LEONARDO and MARE NOSTRUM). They will collaborate with the Centre for Advanced Computing in India (C-DAC) and scientists from the India Meteorological Department, the Institute for Seismological Research, the National Institute for Immunology and AIRAWAT, which hosts one the largest computing resources in India.

BioExcel, ChEESE and ESiWACE are centers of excellence in the three priority areas of the project: Life Science, Geophysical Hazards and Climate&Weather respectively.
