Scientific institutions from both regions launch a major collaboration to tackle global challenges using HPC

The GANANA project, an EU-funded initiative, officially kicks off in Stockholm during a two-day symposium held on May 6–7. The event brings together research partners from Europe and India, alongside representatives from the European Commission, the Government of India, and the Swedish Research Council (VR), marking the start of a promising scientific alliance.

The project aims to harness High-Performance Computing (HPC) to address key global challenges in three areas: life sciences, geophysical hazards, and weather and climate. From accelerating pharmaceutical research to improving disaster forecasting and climate modeling, GANANA promotes the efficient use of HPC to create real-world impact. It also seeks to reduce the economic and human costs of natural disasters.

But GANANA is more than just science and technology—it’s also about building future expertise. The project invests in training a new generation of HPC professionals in both Europe and India, strengthening international capacity building and collaboration.

Among the attendees are Linda Gesenhues, Program Officer at the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, along with delegates from Indian and European funding bodies and research institutions. Their presence highlights the strategic relevance of GANANA for long-term digital innovation and scientific cooperation.

The project also supports broader EU-India goals around digital transformation, open science, and inclusive research ecosystems, providing a platform for new partnerships, co-designed research agendas, and shared knowledge.
