Highlights from 2025: GANANA Made Its International Debut at Supercomputing India
Supercomputing India (SCI) 2025 was the inaugural edition of the Supercomputing Conference Series in India, designed to catalyze breakthroughs in exascale systems, quantum-classical integration, and AI-accelerated computing, strengthening India’s leadership in advanced computing and innovation.
SCI 2025 marked a pivotal moment in India’s digital and technological evolution, bringing together key stakeholders shaping the nation’s future, from scientists and engineers to policymakers, industry leaders, start-ups, and students. GANANA’s Project Director, Rossen Apostolov, participated in the conference and delivered a keynote titled “Supercomputing Without Borders: HPC, AI Factories, and Global Digital Partnership.”
The conference was organized by C-DAC under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and spotlighted applications across climate modeling, healthcare, space, materials science, and defense. It took place from 9 to 13 December 2025 at the Manipal Institute of Technology in Bengaluru, India.
Anchored by transformative national initiatives such as the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), Digital India, India AI, India Semiconductor Mission, and the National Quantum Mission (NQM), SCI 2025 showcased innovation at the convergence of HPC, AI, and Quantum Computing. GANANA’s participation focused on the convergence of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence into a single technological ecosystem, which will define the pace of scientific discovery, industrial competitiveness, and societal resilience. Traditional HPC architectures, software, and workflows are being reshaped by AI-driven methods, while AI itself increasingly relies on large-scale HPC systems.
During his keynote, Rossen Apostolov highlighted the EU–India GANANA initiative as a pioneering model for international scientific collaboration, enabling shared software development, expertise exchange, and long-term digital ecosystem planning across continents. He also explored the emergence of AI Factories as next-generation research infrastructures and the rapidly evolving relationship between HPC and AI.
The talk outlined major global challenges, including energy efficiency, talent shortages, trustworthy AI, and sustainable governance, proposing a framework for a federated HPC–AI future grounded in openness, interoperability, and responsible innovation. Apostolov emphasized that supercomputing has become a truly global effort and identified key HPC challenges, such as energy constraints, portability, system complexity, and the growing skills gap. He discussed the EU’s AI strategy, the importance of dedicated AI capabilities within supercomputers, and the need for secure and trusted compute environments for sensitive workloads. Finally, he showcased new collaboration opportunities between Europe and India through the GANANA and INPACE initiatives.
